World's cleanest diesel SUVs from Merc

All three of Mercedes large SUVs - the R-, ML- and GL-Class - have become the first SUVs with diesel engines to meet tough new emissions laws.

The EU6 and American Bin 5 emissions laws are the strictest ever in the world and the diesel-powered Mercedes are the first SUVs to comply.

Each uses the same 211bhp 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel that is capable of 9.4 L/100km in the GL320 Bluetec and makes this model the most economical full-size SUV on sale in the USA.

A seven-speed automatic gearbox helps the engine produce the minimum carbon dioxide emissions.

These three SUVs are expected to be on sale in the UK later in 2008 and Mercedes will confirm prices closer to then.
