BMW reveals 'new' 3 Series
- Shane O' Donoghue
The 3 Series, despite its executive class image, is a mass market car, and arguably the most important to BMW in terms of sales. It's hardly surprising then that the new version is simply an evolution of the old.
Aesthetically, BMW has mildly reshaped the front and rear ends and fitted new lights with LED technology, while the side view gets a more pronounced line running from front to rear. New wheels and colours also feature.
Inside, the changes are just as subtle, with the 3 Series adopting switchgear and materials found in newer models. Buyers also have the choice of a much improved iDrive system, as well as the option of on-board Internet.
BMW has extended the use of its EfficientDynamics measures across the range.
The only major engine update of note is to the 330d's inline six-cylinder. Thanks to the latest generation of high-pressure fuel systems, and a variable geometry turbocharger, this engine now puts out 241bhp and 384lb.ft of torque, while still returning good fuel economy and CO2 figures.
On the transmission front, selected models will receive the new dual-clutch gearbox first shown in the M3, while the six-speed automatic has been further refined and is available across more of the range.
We expect the new 3 Series to be shown for the first time at the Paris Show this autumn, with sales starting shortly afterwards.
